How Human Are You?

Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 3:13-14)
Being fully human is far more than being born into a certain biological species.
Years ago, Dr. Billy Graham referenced a common saying that is used when people commit evil acts. They say, "He acts like an animal." Dr. Graham replied that in actuality the person is acting like a human.
We simply find it hard to accept the depraved depth to which all mankind fell when Adam bit into the fruit of rebellion. Even people who have a moral compass but live independent from God are in flagrant betrayal of the purpose of creation.
"Mithbarnashutha" is a tongue twister term in the Assyrian Aramaic language (with a Syriac dialect). It means "the humanization of the heart."
Think of that. This world recognizes that mankind is living in a subhuman state, having shattered the image of God that had resided in our first parents - Adam and Eve.
Jesus came to "humanize" the heart of mankind to the state it knew before Adam's rebellious act took us to a subhuman level. To be truly humanized is to be governed in God-likeness by the Holy Spirit of God. Without this act of God the world will never know peace.
How does God "humanize" the heart of mankind? Jesus went to the cross to pay our debt of sin and rose from the dead to place a new birth within us. Thus, some Christians in the Middle East view the coming of Christ as a "rebirth of humanity." In this act, they see man transformed from a "predatory beast" to a human. To be in Christ, they say, is to be a "complete and perfect human."
Herein we forget those things that are behind and focus on Jesus, our example of perfect humanity. As we are transformed into His likeness we once again live in the fullness of the image of God.
If becoming like Christ is your leading priority in the coming year, you will end it having become more human. The redemption of Christ lifts us from our subhuman level to the human level, and therein is completion found.
Together, let's allow the transforming power of Christ to enable us to end this year more human than ever.
