Living Water for Thirsty Souls

Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water...
John 7:38
Nothing is more precious to a parched desert than a storm in the mountains sending rivers of living waters to quench its thirst. The rains come just when it appears as though the land is bound forever in death. The land drinks not for itself alone, but to provide life to shriveled seeds that have been waiting in darkness beneath the crust. Flowers and vegetation bursts forth, giving worship and thanks to the Almighty.
This is equally true of a barren heart that has been baked dry by the cruel harshness of life. The distant horizon offers no path of escape. No voice of hope whispers in the wind. The soul is in a stupor. The victim slogs along, putting one heavy leg in front of the other. A sense of abandonment hovers over the heart.
Then someone speaks a word that floods the soul with rivers of life. The timing proves perfect. The tone of voice is in harmony with the need. The direction given rings true, giving life while still on the desert, as well as at the exit. It feels as though God Himself has spoken.
Actually, He has. Rivers of living water are not generated by mankind, but rather flow from the throne of God. "Jesus stood up and cried out, 'If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.' Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive . . ." (John 7:37-39).
According to Jesus, the headwaters of the rivers of living water begins with God, who said through the prophet, ". . . they [Israelites] have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters" (Jeremiah 2:13).
It is wondrous to think that God elects to grant rivers of living water to flow through earthen vessels - common ordinary people like you and me. What does it take to be God's source of blessing to another? Abiding in the Lord. It is not common sense wisdom that satisfies a thirsty heart, but rather wisdom from above. And that wisdom is ours for the asking (see James 1:5).
If you are crossing a hot, dry desert, and no one has yet spoken rivers of living water, be patient. You are on the desert for a purpose and the word from on high will come in God's time, often through the least suspected person, and in the most surprising way.
Of one thing you can be certain, if you will endure by faith God's life-giving water will not be withheld forever. Once received, you can become a great source through which God can and will give life to others still wandering on the desert.
