The Emotions of God (Part Five: Heartbreak)

 . . .  now I will cry out like a woman in labor; I will gasp and pant. 
(Isaiah 42:14)

         Any father who tells his son that weeping is only for women just robbed the boy of a full-robust life. Stagnant tears in the reservoir of the soul are neither natural nor healthy. 
         
        Strong men weep because their almighty God weeps.  Tears are God's expression of compassion, joy and heartbreak.  Jeremiah has been called "the weeping prophet."  Throughout his book he was also revealing the grief of the weeping God.  God is our Father.  He loves us with an everlasting love, and every life affects Him deeply.
 
        Look how God lets tears flow from his heart over the failures of His people.

  • "My heart cries out for Moab; her fugitives flee . . ." (Isaiah 15:5).
  • "Therefore I said: "Look away from me; let me weep bitter tears; do not labor to comfort me concerning the destruction . . . of my people" (Isaiah 22:4).
  • "I drench you with my tears . . . for over your summer fruit and your harvest the shout has ceased" (Isaiah 16:9).
  • "Look away from me; let me weep bitter tears; do not labor to comfort me concerning the destruction of the daughter of my people" (Isaiah 22:4).
  • "But if you will not listen, my soul will weep in secret for your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly and run down with tears, because the LORD's flock has been taken captive" (Jeremiah 13:17).
  • "You shall say to them this word:  Let my eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease, for the virgin daughter of my people is shattered with a great wound, with a very grievous blow" (Jeremiah 14:17).

         Paul talked about sharing in the sufferings of Christ.  As God weeps over mankind's rebellion, so must we.  Jesus spoke of this union in sorrow this way, ". . . you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice.  You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.  When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.  So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you" (John 16:20-22).

         The closer you draw to God the more deeply you will share in His broken-heartedness over our world.  What an honor!  Indeed, share deeply in His sufferings that you may also share fully in His joy.
