THE RIVER OF DELIGHTS

“They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights.
For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light.”
(Psalm 36:8-9 ESV)

The ESV commentary states that, “Although the Psalm is a hymn for Israel, it looks beyond Israel to the rest of mankind (see Ps. 36:6-7); Israel’s calling was to live in their land in a way that displayed the true image of God, with the view of bringing its blessing to the whole world.”

Herbert Lockyer tells a great story in his devotional on Psalm 36. He writes of a father who moved his family to a new house, much larger than the one they were leaving. It had many more features than the one they left. His youngest son ran through the rooms scanning every article with ecstasy, then called out in childish wonder, “Is this ours, father? and is this ours?” “The joyous child did not say ‘yours’ but ‘ours.’” The father was delighted to see the child confidently embrace as his own all his father had.

The River of Sovereignty is God’s will and purpose flowing through time. All, including you, are invited to enter this magnificent stream to see God fulfill His marvelous purpose for your life. Upon repentance at the cross, He exalts you as a co-equal heir with His Son, Jesus Christ.

Now you can look at the mountains, valleys and streams and cry out, “Is this ours?” “Yes,” is the reply. Pose the same question when looking at an inky black star-studded sky. The answer is, “Yes!” Ponder God’s promises and ask, “Are these for all of us?” God replies, “All My promises are “Yes!” in My Son, Jesus Christ.”

Imagine the day you enter heaven’s gates. The Apostle Paul wrote, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Cor. 2:9). In wonderment, you may fall to your knees asking, “Is this all ours?” The most loving voice ever heard will reply, “Yes, My child, it is all ours.”

The Church is comprised of people from every tongue and race. Thus, the Apostle Paul wrote these words to every believer, “For all the promises of God find their yes in him” (2 Cor. 1:20).

The child in Lockyer’s story did nothing to earn the right to ask, “Is this ours” except be born into this home. There is nothing you can do to receive the endless delights found in the River of Sovereignty except be “born again.” At the cross God removes your sin and implants a new heart. This makes you a member of His family to enjoy all that is “ours” in Christ.

Here is a prayer to assure your place in God’s family: “Dear God, I know that I am a sinner. Your Son Jesus died to remover my sins as far as the east is from the west. I am trusting Your love and forgiveness right now. I’m asking You for the power to live committed to You, obedient to Your will, from now until I meet You in Heaven. In closing, I thank You that now I can ask, ‘Is this ours?’ knowing that the answer is yes—especially Your promises. Thank You in Jesus’ name, Amen.”
